New Year, new ideas

Well, it's 2013.  January has rolled over on the calendar, and everyone is making resolutions.

I don't ever make any personally, but I thought this would be a good time to try something new.  Rather than doing anything like the normal (fitness/exercise, finances, etc), I thought I would challenge myself to do one little "photo essay," a week.  Aim for the weekends, focus on setting up 10 photos, and keep myself to that.  I'll allow myself to break the 10 photo rule if needed, but I don't want to end up with 200+ photos at the zoo, and that's my weekend.

Since this is week one, and the tree is still up, I thought the Christmas tree and ornaments would make a good first objective.  It's not outside (it get's cold here), it's still, I can setup the tripod, and I can take advantage of the macro option on my lenses.

This was mostly shot with my 28-135 on my Canon T4i.  The R2D2 ornament was shot with my 50mm f1.4 (wanted to get some good wide aperture shallow depth of field.  Yoda was shot with my 55-250.  The 135 just wasn't close enough to be able to get the frame I was looking for.

Hopefully this will be something I can easily keep to, and come up with good ideas for.

Ward-Davis wedding

Well, some friends got married this weekend.  Sat Sept 1 was the magic day in Lincoln.

I decided to take my camera along.  Between the wedding and the reception I captured 428 moments on camera.  After culling ones that were out of focus or had technical flaws, ended with about 415.  After that started making selections based on content and narrowed it down to about 85, and those got exported to jpeg and uploaded to Facebook for tagging and commenting.

I must have done something good, because my phone keeps lighting up with likes and comments.

O, and through the whole edit, export and upload process my MacBook Air kicked the fans into super overdrive mode and turned the shell into super hot mode.  So glad we have a lap pad to put it on.

Had some friends and some kiddos over on a hot day for a little chicken on the grill and a pool.

Initial Post

My name is David and I'm a computer programmer by day.

By hobby, I have a Canon DSLR camera my wife picked out years ago.  I enjoy taking pictures, and we discussed coming up with a watermark since it seems that all of the photos we share end up on everyone's facebook feeds, profile shots, or just passed around.

We used to have this great cat we got from the pound.  His name was Schubert, and he responded to it.  We lost him about 3 years ago, but decided to use his name as the inspiration for the name.  Plus, the alliteration isn't too bad either.  And hence SchubyShots was born.

I've read of other people using Blogger/BlogSpot for doing a photo blog, so I thought I'd give it a go.  I also just recently acquired an application that will process images in bulk for resizing and watermarking.   I'll give that a go, get some photos uploaded and see how that goes.
